PANDEMIC- Reforming The Conventional Education System

PANDEMIC- Reforming The Conventional Education System

Covid-19 has imprisoned the world in the confines of the four walls and while normalcy seems to be seeping back into our society. Gradually, educational institutions across the globe have gone against the traditional norm of classroom education to adopt technology's gift to mankind - the digital world.

The pandemic has caused an uproar across the world and challenged mankind to restructure the norms that became our pillars of comfort and security.

So what does the future hold for the students?

Even though the term remote education has achieved a new height during the ongoing pandemic and has seen an upsurge, it is important to know the many ways that online learning during COVID-2019 pandemic can be conducted to benefit the students better.

Remote learning also popularly known as online education can range from live zoom classes known as webinars to MOOCs a. k. a Massive Open Online Course. MOOCs allow the educators to impart knowledge by supplying the students with pre-recorded classes.

The Challenges of Online Education

The educational sector took a massive leap as it shifted its course from the classroom to the world governed by the internet. As the era of digital education gains immense popularity, this transition has been the prey of a lot of challenges.

Remote learning has proven to be quite advantageous in areas of good internet connectivity, still has a lot of drawbacks. Even though the journey from classroom to online education during COVID-19 has been quite a smooth sailing in private universities, public universities on the other hand seem to be stuck in a rut of inadequate infrastructure and still grappling with the many drawbacks that the online classes during pandemic come with.

What are some of the cons of online education?

A youth's mind is the house of millions of questions and observations, millions of whys and hows, millions of doubts. There's a hidden wanderer in each student as their minds wander off in search of answers.

Education is knowledge and knowledge is a treasure box which the education thirsty student quenches his thirst with. Education doesn't limit itself to textbooks. Education intends to expand the student's horizon and break the chains of preconceived notions.

Education feeds the student's with ideas, imagination, reasoning and invites opinions formed by different students, while morphing the student into a responsible, knowledgeable and perceptive human being.

Online education tends to restrict this expansive and much needed in person communication and an environment of free flowing discourse and exchange of ideas amongst the students as well as with the faculty members.

In a world that is constantly developing, a large population still doesn't have access to a good internet connection. Millions of students come from impoverished families who don't have the means to sufficient resources to enjoy the blessings of technology.

  1. Both the faculty as well as the students must be equipped with internet connection as well as laptops or smartphones to benefit from this system.

Unfortunately, more than half the population of the world is still suffering from poverty and come from underprivileged families, where they do not get prerogative that we are so accustomed to. This makes it impossible for them to make the most of the technology that seems to be binding the world together during this health crisis.

  1. Online education tends to make the students lazy and unresponsive to the education being imparted to them. Not only do students procrastinate and keep culminating all the assignments and learning for the last day but also find it easier to get away with cheating in examinations and other classwork.

Not only this curbs them from learning anything of value but also makes this a habit that will only drag them down in the future. A large percentage of students find it extremely difficult to follow a strict routine and get easily distracted, especially when they have the liberty to push it off until the very end.

What Are The Pros Of Online Education?

As students, we always spend a lot of our pocket money on commuting to and fro. Not only does this cause a dent in our budget due to the travel costs but also consumes a large part of our day as we spend hours traveling from our house to the educational institute and back. Online education not only allows us to cut back on travel costs but also saves us a lot of valuable time which otherwise would have been lost.

  1. Online education allows us to pursue and maintain our passions and hobbies as well as attend classes regularly.
  2. Online education gives us a considerable amount of time to schedule our education around our co-curriculars, internships and spend quality time to develop one's personal skills. The students are allowed to work as per their comfort and schedule, without rushing the assignments.
  3. Online education makes it extremely convenient for those who are limited by their geographical location or any other incapacity that denies them their right to education.
  4. Online education promotes diversity as it brings the international students together and allows them to learn beyond the conformities that would otherwise restrict them. Students coming from different backgrounds and different walks of life are given the opportunity to exchange their first hand experiences and views.
Will The Post COVID-19 Education System Change The Way The World Has Always Viewed Education?

Even though online education during the outbreak of coronavirus has challenged the age-old norm of classroom education, to make online education the new norm, the governments of the world must assess the deep-rooted issues of connectivity and privilege that the unfortunates are unable to enjoy. This pandemic must be seen as an opportunity to conquer the geographical and class differences and prepare the youth for a digital world.

Covid-19 presents an opportunity that should be explored. An opportunity that will change the way the world has forever looked at education. An opportunity that expands beyond the boundaries of geography and disabilities. A gateway to digitally bridge the world. A door to an undiscovered world of ideas shared by the masterminds and thinkers of this generation.
